Always wanted to learn how to pickle and ferment your fruits & veggies?  Just in time for the holidays, we’re partnering with 24 Carrot Health to offer a lacto fermenting class on pickles, relish, and chutney here at Urban Acres on Sunday, December 4th!

Why Ferment?


The focus of these classes is the basic process of transformation, which mainly involve creating conditions in which naturally occurring wild organisms thrive and proliferate. Fermentation makes food more digestible and nutritious, preserves nutrients, improves the bioavailability of minerals present in foods, and creates new nutrients.

Live unpasteurized fermented foods carry beneficial bacteria directly into into our digestive systems where they exist symbiotically breaking down food and aiding digestion. By eating a variety of live fermented foods one you promote diversity among microbial cultures in your body.

Do It Yourself Holiday Lacto Fermenting Workshop: Pickles, Relish, and Chutney

Those attending the class will make pickled veggies (giardiniera), 5 spice apple chutney, and cranberry relish, and everyone takes home about a pint of each.

You’ve heard a lot about probiotics and how good they are for you, but how do you get them from food, and more importantly how do you get them where you need them…in your belly, hello?

Come learn to make your own delicious lacto fermented condiments! Lisa Staffelbach, Personal Chef and Health Coach of 24 Carrot Health, is offering a fun hands-on workshop making lacto fermented pickles and chutneys that will add some jingle your holiday meals from breakfast through dinner. We’ll be making a classic giardiniera that will spice things up as well as top a turkey or ham sandwich, 5 spice apple (or pear) chutney, delicious with meats but equally yummy in your oatmeal for breakfast, and a tart and sweet cranberry relish also tasty with meats but can serve as a topping for vanilla ice cream. This workshop is designed to be hands-on, to take the mystery out of lacto fermentation, and engage your senses and creativity. Class participants will take home a pint jar with a sample of each ferment to “finish” at home and receive the recipes for all ferments made in class.

All recipes are gluten free.

Class is limited to 12 participants.
