Tyler Street Christian Academy Kids Learn About Healthy Food!

June 16, 2011

Today at Urban Acres, we had some very special visitors…kids from Tyler Street Christian Academy here in Oak Cliff.  The kids, ages 4-12, are about to start a garden for their summer camp, so they came by to learn about the difference between organic and conventional food. Our awesome staffer Liz Goulding expained how conventional food uses pesticides and fertilizers and other nasty chemicals, while organic food uses natural methods for growing food.

They also learned that food is important in three ways:

1. For our bodies (more nutrients, etc).
2. For the people that grow/raise our food (supporting local farmers and small/family businesses).
3. For the environment (growing food in a sustainable way so that we can continue to have food in the future).

The kids were allowed to bring some money with them so they could shop around and find something they’d like to buy at the end.

Fun times!
