Swiss Red Chard – what to do?!

March 30, 2010

We’ve been getting a lot of questions about what to do with the Swiss chard. Great questions!

The two most popular (and best uses) for Swiss chard are:

  1. Chop it up and add it into a stew
  2. Sautee it with onions, olive oil, some garlic, and butter

Here’s a quick recipe for the second one:

  1. Heat the olive oil in a pan.
  2. Add the garlic and onions and saute for about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the Swiss chard and saute until it starts to wilt.
  4. Season with salt, pepper, and butter.

Found some good Swiss chard recipes?? Please comment or email them to and we’ll try to include them in a post.

I have been seeing a lot of chard plants in the nursery. I thought it was a fall/winter plant. Will it grow during the summers in Houston?

I sautéed mine and chopped it up finely and mixed it with a ricotta mixture and stuffed homemade ravioli. I used the beautiful local eggs to make the pasta. It was the best ravioli I have ever made!
