Cold Chickens Are Not Happy Chickens

January 26, 2010

It’s that time of year when our girls just stop laying eggs.  Who wants to work when it’s this chilly outside anyway?

We get all of our eggs for Urban Acres from truly free-range pastured chickens.  This means they’re never housed inside in cages, and they can freely roam the open-air pastures to peck and eat bugs until their hearts desire.  All the eggs are organic and of course we keep our farmers to a high standard of using the best natural practices.

In the real world of farming, chickens just don’t lay as many eggs in the winter time. In industrial farming or even some forms of “cage-free” or “free-range,” chickens still have very little access to the outside world.  When a chicken is constantly pumped with hormones and antibiotics, they are simply forced like machines to lay eggs.

All of that to say, please be patient with us if we don’t have as many eggs during the winter months.  We are doing our best to find new farmers every day to keep up with our demand.  So hopefully they’re not all gone when you show up on Saturday – come early!
